Once you’ve made your favourite cup of coffee, don’t just toss out the remnants of your brew. Used coffee grounds are surprisingly versatile. Here are a few ways you can give them a second life:

1. Make your own exfoliating scrub
Used coffee grounds make an excellent exfoliating body scrub. Mix the grounds with your preferred natural oil and sugar. The coarse particles will help remove dirt and dead cells, leaving you with smoother skin.

2. Use them as plant fertiliser
Sprinkle used coffee grounds onto the soil surrounding your plants to keep them healthy. Coffee grounds are rich in key minerals that are essential for plant growth – namely nitrogen, potassium and magnesium. You’ll also enjoy the added benefit of keeping ants and other critters at bay as coffee grounds also repel them.

3. Turn them into odour eliminators
Place an open container of dry used coffee grounds inside your fridge or freezer to neutralise any unwanted odours. This also works well for shoe cabinets, cupboards, and closets. What’s more, once you’ve removed the odours, you can still use the grounds to fertilise your plants!

4. Clean pots and dishware with them
Scour away gunk and grime by sprinkling used coffee grounds on your pots and pans (test this on a small spot to ensure that you won’t scratch the surface before applying them everywhere). The mildly abrasive texture will scrape away any caked-on dirt. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

5. Produce your own natural dyes
Get creative and use coffee grounds to dye paper, fabric, or yarn to create that vintage look! Combine used coffee grounds with water and soak the item in the mixture. The longer you leave the item in the mixture, the darker the shade of sepia you’ll achieve.
